I designed and printed a set of Beverage Coasters inspired by one of the most beautiful and iconic features of the James Webb Space Telescope - the primary mirror assembly consisting of 18 hexagonal segments of gold-plated beryllium.

While creating an early prototype I got a little impatient and tried to use an oven to reduce the time taken for the clear gloss sealer to dry.
Instead the plastic curled up from the edges to create a shallow, concaved shape.
While this makes a terrible coaster, it is a slightly more accurate representation of the JWST's primary mirror array as it focuses light onto the secondary mirror.
As Bob Ross would say; "a happy little accident"

The mirror segments were modeled in OpenSCAD as cylinders with
$fn=6
to become hexagonal prisms, then the mirror holders were modeled as the difference between a slightly larger hexagonal prism and the mirror, plus a fudge factor to account for the printer tolerance - a Lulzbot Mini in this case. Finally, multiple mirror holders were positioned together to form the array. All parts were then printed in Hatchbox PLA; the mirrors in gold, the housing array and center segment in black.
Fun fact: JWST's primary mirrors are positioned using polar coordinates and divided into 3 groups - A, B, & C - each consisting of 6 mirrors. The mirrors in each group all have the same distance from the origin, and only differ in their angle from the reference direction.

Once printed, the segments were glued into the array and then multiple grits of sandpaper (150, 180, 220, & 1500) were used to get a smooth and reflective top. Finally, a few coats of clear gloss sealer was applied to enhance the sheen.
